The next morning all public museums here in Florence were free to the public. It turns out the first Sunday of the month is always free. I love the spirit of that, don't you? So off in the rain we go to check out the line........very long indeed but moving fast. We waited about forty minutes and we were in to see The Famous David by Michelangelo!
Yes, it is absolutely impressive and in person it is so large and so lifelike (with the veins in his arm and hand looking as if he will hurl that stone at any minute) that you truly are in awe of his work. It is 17 feet tall, unveiled in 1504, and made of marble. It stood outside in a piazza until 1873 when it was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia. If you come to Florence it is a must see!
Waiting in line:
The very famous David:
After we got out we circled around the Duomo and it was pouring down rain. As you can see everyone pulled out an umbrella or bought one from a street vendor and kept sight-seeing. We took an hour to get back to our B & B which should have been a ten minute walk because we kept ducking into protected doorways to get out of the downpour. It was pretty interesting because many locals and tourists were doing the same thing. The ones who didn't will have some drying out to do of shoes and clothes.
