Day 1-2: September 2-3 Arrive in Milan and meet our Italian tutor and her boyfriend for lunch.
Day 3: September 4 Transport by train to Verres
Day 5: September 6 Pont St. Martin to Ivrea - 22 Km / 13.7 miles - We got a ride from the woman at our lodging for the first seven miles. She dropped us off at Settimo Vittone and then we walked 9.5 miles. Ate very little due to most of the restaurants being closed. Wine and a little appetizer for dinner.
Day 6-7: Septmber 7-8 Ivrea to Viverone - 20 Km / 12.4 miles - We caught a bus to Burolo and then walked the rest of the way which was 8.3 miles. I (Denise) developed a blister and was happy for a day and 1/2 to heal.
Day 8: September 9 Viverone to Santhia to Vercelli - 17 Km / 10.5 miles to Santhia and then Santhia to Vercelii - 27 Km / 16.8 miles. We had difficulty finding lodging in Santhia and the miles to Vercelli were too far for us so we chose to transport via train to Vercelli. There was no train stop in Viverone and no bus traveling the day we were leaving town so once again our lodging hostess gave us a ride to Santhia to catch the train. She had to go there on business that day.
Day 9: September 10 Vercelli to Robbio 19 Km / 11.8 miles then Robbio to Mortara 14.5 Km / 9 miles
Again even though we booked ahead there was very little in the way of lodging so chose again to transport to Mortara via train. We then had to walk about 3-4 miles to a little town outside of Mortara where our hotel was. Terrible hotel and learning a few things along the way.
Day 10-11: September 11-12 Mortara to Garlasco 24 Km / 14.9 miles and then Garlasco to Gropello Cairoli 8 Km / 5 miles
We caught a bus back into Mortara, booked tickets on the train to Gropello Cairoli but planned to get off and walk from Garlasco to Gropello Cairoli. Alas it was raining and we decided to ride the train the whole way. We then had to hang out in a caffè from about 10:30 - 2:00 when we could get into our lodging for the day. We had decided to skip our nights stay in Garlasco and stay two night in Gropello Cairoli. It was a beautiful restored villa so we enjoyed our stay. The next day was sunny so we walked back to Garlasco and back along the Via Francigena route, we think that counts! We walked about 10 miles that day.
Day 12-13: September 13-14 Gropello Cairoli to Pavia 18 Km / 11.2 miles
It was clear skies for about five minutes then the rain started and poured on us the rest of the way. We walked about 8.5 miles and then our hostess and her husband from the villa came looking for us after they attended church in Pavia. They gave us a ride to our hotel. We were so grateful for we were quite soaked by then. We planned to stay in Pavia two days.
Hope this helps my logical, sequential minds out there reading our blog..........((:
Just so you know, I am not a logical, sequential thinker so this was painful for me, lol.
